Meet Mike
Writer, Editor, Trainer, Manager
Raised in Burlington, Vermont, I discovered my passion for writing while living in Istanbul, where I got my first paid writing gig.
Fifteen years later, I've served on every rung of the editorial ladder, from a contributing writer at dozens of print and digital publications to editor in chief of a local newspaper to managing editor of several travel magazines.
Currently, I serve as a senior editorial manager for a national marketing company, producing articles and content for various companies, organizations, and non-profits.

My career in education goes even longer, serving as a teacher of English as a second language for 12 years before becoming a journalist. In the past six years, I've taught classes in article writing, travel writing, creative nonfiction, and self-editing at Gotham Writers Workshop in NYC. I've also taught journalism at the university level.

In short, wherever you are on your writing journey, I've been there, too.

Let me show you how to take the next step.

"If you think you're a writer, think twice. Enroll in this class, take the pacifier out of your mouth and keep a shot of scotch close by to help you swallow your ego. Your writer's old ass will be kicked into the street, run over by race cars, rickshaws and reindeer and returned, reincarnated."
"The instructor is a veritable yogi with the torque and intention of a tractor."
"I so appreciate the way you combine surgical precision and compassion in your direct feedback."

What Mike's students say....
Mike gave practical, clear-headed, and insightful feedback throughout the course, thoughtfully answering students' questions with patience and care. He wasn't overly serious, bringing a levity to the exercises and lectures that helped put students at ease and made the hours go by quickly. It was clear that Mike has a wealth of experience to share and was eager to help students build their own writing careers.
He was willing to go above and beyond to explain the smallest details to the students and would not hold back,. He's a really great teacher and obviously cares about his work and teaching others. Even though this isn't a formal academic setting, he would take the work and the questions really seriously...and would always take the time to critique our work and provide constructive feedback
I learned a great deal about the art and technique of writing articles and gained invaluable insights into what it's like to be a freelance writer. I feel I now have a solid grounding in the techniques of crafting good story ideas, pitches, ledes, and articles. I haven't experienced such a motivated and well-intentioned instructor of anything in a while - and I take lots of different courses.
